When is the deadline for submitting my application?
The Research Assessment Group meet twice a year, the next meeting will be held in June 2018, so if you wish for us to consider your research grant request, please submit to us before the next deadline on 31st May 2018.

What size grant can I apply for?
BIRD endeavours to maximise the amount it spends on supporting its charitable objectives with particular emphasis, but not exclusively, on supporting research primarily through pump-prime funding for smaller projects undertaken in or from Bath.
- BIRD looks to award small to medium sized grants, which would be ideally suited for pilot studies etc. BIRD has no set amount for grants applied for.
- BIRD encourages match funding where the applicant has secured funding from another source.
- BIRD may not award the full amount applied for. In these circumstances the applicant will be asked to confirm they still wish to accept the award.
- Exceptionally BIRD may accept applications for larger amounts. In this situation applicants should contact the Executive Director (ED) for further guidance before making an application
How will my application be assessed?
Each application will be reviewed and assessed by BIRD’s Research Assessment Group.
Each application will be given a preliminary scrutiny on receipt to ensure it is relevant to BIRD’s objectives and contains all the required elements, or an acceptable rationale for not doing so. Feedback will be given in response to incomplete applications.
There will be four outcomes;
- Conditional upon minor amendments and subject to review out of committee by any two members of the RAG, as designated in the meeting.
- Resubmit to the next meeting having addressed the RAG’s significant comments.
- Unsuccessful and not eligible for resubmission.
The applicant will be invited to introduce their application to the meeting and further information may be sought from the applicant at any point in the process.
If an application falls outside the combined expertise of the Research Assessment Group, BIRD reserves the right to invite feedback from relevant specialists, e.g., a statistician or a health economist, as appropriate.
How/when will I know if my application has been successful?
The Research Assessment Group will keep you updated on your application progress throughout the process.
We aim to let you know our final decision, and if successful, the grant awarded to you 8 – 12 weeks after the closing date for submissions.
How will you use my research grant to promote BIRD?
The BIRD website will be updated throughout the project with news of each grant awarded including its value and brief details of the study.
News of grants awarded will also be posted on social media, a press release issued and so forth.
We would ask you to use BIRDs logo on ALL published documents, posters, presentations etc.
