The Post-traumatic Osteoarthritis Support Tool (POST) study.

Knee-related post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a type of osteoarthritis which affects young people with a history of joint injury including fracture, ligament rupture, joint dislocation, or meniscus tear.

The project set out to:

– Understand the lived experience of early-onset PTOA symptoms and medical care-seeking behaviours of young people with a history of knee joint injury.

– Develop and conduct initial evaluation of a symptom self-management tool to promote healthy behaviours (e.g., physical activity) for those with early PTOA symptoms. Click on the links below to take you to the papers:

Exploring educational challenges in children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA)

Children with JIA report pain, fatigue, harmful effects on their physical, social and emotional wellbeing, as well as disruption to their school experience. While we know that frequent school absence results in poor grades and reduced chances for young people to enter into higher education and later success in the labour market, little is known regarding how to support children with JIA to have a positive school experience. This study provided a detailed account of the challenges they face and what support they need. In the first of two publications from this study, we present findings from an online survey and subsequent interviews with teaching staff as to how best we can facilitate them to support children with JIA.
